Crop image to square, 16:9, 4:5, or Open Graph

A portrait in warm light - crop for the face, then size for the slot

Use this page to crop an image online to the box it will actually fill. A good crop decides what the picture is about. Compression cannot recover a subject standing in the wrong third. Platforms will crop again if you give them a square for a 1.91:1 Open Graph slot. Do the honest crop here, then size and compress.

1:1 is avatars, many carousels, and some product grids. 4:5 is how Instagram still gives you more phone screen. 16:9 is video thumbs and many blog heroes. 1.91:1 is the link preview that Facebook and LinkedIn have agreed on for years. Free is for when the story is not a preset.

Drag the rectangle so faces and packs sit in the safe middle. Edges are where apps disagree. After you export, resize if the crop is still larger than the slot, or jump to social image sizes when you need cover/contain into a named box. Circle avatars belong on round image corners.

Crop vs CSS object-fit

On a site you own, CSS can clip. The unused pixels still travel. Crop here when the file will be uploaded somewhere that crops again, or when you care about bytes.

CSS - last-mile clip on a site you control
.card-media {
  aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;
  overflow: hidden;
}
.card-media img {
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
  object-fit: cover;
  object-position: center 30%;
}
HTML - after a 1.91:1 crop for the share card

Frequently asked questions

What crop ratio is Open Graph (1200x630)?

1.91:1, which is 1200x630. Use that when the crop will become a link preview. For Instagram portrait, use 4:5.

Can I crop a batch of images to the same size?

This cropper is built for one composition at a time. For identical output boxes (every SKU to 1080 square), use social sizes or resize with cover.

Why not crop with CSS object-fit instead?

CSS can hide overflow in a browser you control. It cannot fix the file you upload to a platform that will crop again, or the bytes of the unused edges.

Free crop or a locked aspect ratio?

Lock when the destination is a known box. Free when the story is not a preset and you will set width later.

Does crop image remove EXIF?

The download is a new encode, so the original wrapper does not come along. Keep the master if you still want GPS in your archive.

Where do I circle-crop an image?

Use round image corners for a circular PNG with a transparent outside.
