Convert PNG to JPEG, WebP, or AVIF

Oranges and leaves - a photograph that usually wants WebP on the page and JPEG on the share card

Use this page to convert an image to WebP, AVIF, JPEG, or PNG when you already know the destination. People say convert to WebP as if it were a moral upgrade. It is a trade. WebP (and AVIF) usually win on photographs in supporting browsers. They are the wrong choice for an Open Graph tag. PNG remains correct for a logo with a clean edge. JPEG remains the language every crawler and every email client still speaks.

Use this page when you already know the destination. Site body images: WebP, with a JPEG fallback if you still serve older browsers - pair with the picture tag generator. Share cards: JPEG. App icons and screenshots of type: PNG. AVIF when you have checked Can I Use for your audience and this browser offers the option.

Convert PNG to JPEG without losing a transparent background

JPEG will fill alpha. If a cut-out product suddenly sits on white, that is the format, not a bug. WebP and PNG can keep the hole. Flatten on purpose only when the page background is known and you want to avoid alpha tax.

WebP with a JPEG fallback (picture tag)

Convert twice if you need a modern type and a fallback. Then point the markup at both. Do not convert a 5000-pixel master and call it done - resize to the layout first.

HTML - WebP with JPEG fallback
<picture>
  <source type="image/webp" srcset="/media/still.webp">
  <img src="/media/still.jpg" alt="Oranges on linen"
       width="1280" height="1280" loading="lazy">
</picture>

Convert vs resize vs compress

A 5000-pixel WebP is still a 5000-pixel decode. Compress if you want to stay in a similar format and only drop weight. Inspect first with image inspector if you are not sure you are looking at a photo or a graphic.

Frequently asked questions

Will convert to JPEG keep a transparent background?

No. JPEG has no alpha. Transparent pixels become a matte (usually white or black depending on the encoder). Use PNG or WebP if you need a hole.

Why is convert to AVIF greyed out?

This browser cannot encode AVIF to a canvas. Chrome often can; some Safari versions cannot. Convert to WebP as the widely supported modern option.

Is convert image the same as compress image?

Conversion changes the container and codec. You still choose quality for lossy formats. A PNG-to-PNG convert does little unless you also resize.

What format should I use for a website photo?

WebP for the page you control, with a JPEG fallback if you still serve older browsers. Pair with the picture tag generator.

What format should I use for an Open Graph image?

JPEG for photographs, PNG when the card is type-heavy. Do not use WebP or AVIF for og:image.

Does convert to WebP remove EXIF?

Yes. The download is a new encode. Keep the original if you still want camera tags in your archive.
